Message on door-to-door sales

From the Athens-Clarke County Police Department:

Springtime traditionally brings out the door-to-door sales people. This spring is no different. In the last several weeks, the Police Department has seen an increase in suspicious person calls for door-to-door sales people. Athens-Clarke County ordinances require that "Every person engaged in street sales or itinerant sales, whether the principal or an employee, shall be required to obtain from the government a valid individual identification badge" (ACC Code 6-6-2). Door-to-door sales people must prominently display that badge (ACC Code 6-6-3). There may be some sales people who are not aware of this ordinance and have not obtained proper identification. There may also be people going door-to-door who are not legitimate sales people. We encourage our citizens to be aware of activity in their neighborhood. If a person or vehicle looks out of place or the subject is acting suspiciously, we encourage citizens to call 911 and report it. As much information about the person/vehicle should be given to the call taker – race, sex, clothing, height, weight, direction of travel, vehicle description, etc. While this information is being gathered, the call is being dispatched. Help your Police Department keep our community safe by being eyes and ears in your neighborhood. As Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr., likes to say, “If you see something, say something.” Your help will be appreciated!!
