Midnight 5K foot race in Boulevard area

From the email:

On Friday, March 22 LEAD Athens will be holding a 5k road race that will begin at midnight and run along portions of Childs St, Barrow St, Barber St, Boulevard, Pound St, Yonah Ave, and Park Ave.... The race begins at the St. Joseph’s Church campus parking lot on Childs St. All runners are expected to be off the road by 1:00 AM. We are asking residents and the general public to please refrain from driving on these roads during this time. This fundraiser is designed so that current and future graduates of LEAD Athens can support a community outreach need and show their commitment to the health and welfare of our vibrant city. This race will be so much more fun for our runners if we have the support of the neighborhood! Please make plans to cheer them on from you lawns Friday night. If you’re a runner we’d love for you to participate! For more information please visit us at http://www.facebook.com/LEADAthensMidnight5k. For registration please visit http://www.active.com/running/athens-ga/lead-athens-midnight-5k-2013.

I posted this after early registration ended. Sorry about that. But who wants to go cheer on runners at midnight? It might be a totally different crowd from those early-morning runners.

Benefit for Athenspets

On Saturday, March 16, The Georgia Bar in downtown Athens is hosting a memorial celebration, honoring the memory of former UGA Vet School staffers John Jack Herndon and Gregg Marcus. Both men loved their pets and rescued several themselves. There'll be a raffle and donations accepted for AthensPets.Net, a volunteer group dedicated to finding permanent homes or rescues for all animals at the Athens animal shelter. The Ga Bar, NE Ga Distributors, Terrapin Brewery and Street Cafe of Athens have all donated items for the raffle which will include Terrapin Brewery tour passes, coozies, tee-shirts and more. The High Mountain Ramblers, whose bassist is MLC staffer Tommy Jones, will play music by the Grateful Dead, acoustic and electric. Party and raffle begin at 7:00 pm, music from 9pm - 1am. Hope you will join us for a St. Patrick's celebration, honoring friends who honored their pets!

Harmless objects continue to cause mayhem in Athens

This week a bottle containing liquid was considered suspicious at the Social Security Administration office, so authorities stopped traffic and had the UGA bomb squad remove it:

http://onlineathens.com/local-news/2013-03-07/liquid-athens-social-security-building-not-hazardous

Three weeks ago a box of clothes was considered suspicious at the downtown post office and federal courthouse building:

http://onlineathens.com/local-news/2013-02-11/unattended-package-athens-post-office-turns-out-be-bag-clothes

When searching for that second article I found out that this was not the first time that a box of clothes shut down a post office in Athens:

You may also remember that someone put candy in the double-barreled cannon and caused mayhem:

http://onlineathens.com/stories/092403/new_20030924072.shtml

There are probably many unreported incidents of people checking out boxes and bottles on their own without trepidation or assistance from the police. I do understand that federal facilities may be targets for terrorism, but I just hope we are not overreacting too much. Maybe these items looked particularly suspicious but the authorities do not want to show images of these things for some reason.

Haley Dreis and Caleb Caudle at Flicker on March 7

Pop-folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Haley Dreis and Americana musician Caleb Caudle will perform at Flicker Theatre and Bar on March 7 as part of their busy spring tour. Dreis has been described as a "Former violin prodigy-turned-South Carolina coffeeshop favorite-turned up and coming Nashville acolyte" by Nick Deriso in Something Else Reviews. Caudle's music has been described as the "sweet spot between alt.country and roots pop" by Spencer Griffith of Independent Weekly. I'm not music reviewer, so I'm not sure what all that means, but this fits right in at Flicker and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
