Police checkpoints this weekend

This probably comes as no surprise, but the Athens-Clarke County Police Department reports as follows:

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department will conduct vehicle check points to detect impaired drivers on Friday night August 16, 2013 and into the morning of August 17, 2013.

Residential apartments in Fred Building (Southern Mutual Building)

Plans have been submitted and approved for remodeling part of the Fred Building and changing them into residential apartments. The plans show how the second, third, and fourth floors could be changed from office space into apartments. The Fred Building was formerly known as the Southern Mutual Insurance Company Building and is located at 220 College Avenue; it houses Wachovia Bank and the City Bar. Although I do not know the status of any permits or actual decisions to implement any part of the plans, the plans themselves have been approved as meeting zoning requirements. I do not think that any further regulatory review will be required as there are no proposed exterior changes that would necessitate review by the Historic Preservation Commission.

Smoker's Den temporarily smoke-free?

I just received word that the Smoker's Den downtown has temporarily lost authority to sell tobacco. I wonder why they are even open for the meantime and what portion of their business is actually not tobacco.

Town & Gown Players Present Hamlet

This production from the Town and Gown Players is directed by Mike Smith and are scheduled August 16 through 18 and August 22 through 25. No spoiler alert needed, but their website states "The themes of the plot cover indecision, revenge and retribution, deception, ambition, loyalty and fate." There is a special student ticket price of $8 for August 22. You better plan to get your tickets now because a classic work by Shakespeare performed by a classic theater group is going to sell quickly.
