On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Athens-Clarke County Police Department along with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, The University of Georgia Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Gwinnett County Police Department, the Internal Revenue Service, and the District Attorney's Office of the Western Judicial Circuit, executed search and arrest warrants in response to an on-going investigation into fencing of stolen property and / or commercial gambling at four convenience store locations in Clarke and Oconee Counties. This investigation was facilitated by the cooperation of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, the Walton County Sheriff's Office, the U. S. Attorney's Office of the Middle District, and the Georgia Attorney General's Office.
Search warrants were executed at the following commercial sites:
- BP Station at 1925 W. Broad Street in Athens.
- Oconee Food Mart at 8851 Macon Highway in Oconee County
- Stop and Shop at 645 Danielsville Road in Athens
- Magnolia Convenience Store and First Chance Package at 4450 Atlanta Highway in Bogart
In total, 14 search warrants were served in three counties. Seven search warrants were served in Athens-Clarke County, five in Oconee County, and two in Gwinnett County.
